How do I buy or install an AT&T eSIM while traveling in Italy?

Answer

AT&T eSIM purchases and international eligibility depend on your account type and whether AT&T will sell or transfer that plan while you are abroad. If the iPhone already shows AT&T Cellular Plan Ready to be Installed, finish installation in Settings under Cellular/Mobile Data rather than buying a second plan.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Deleting an active eSIM while abroad can remove your known-working line until the carrier replaces it.
  • Do not buy eSIM QR codes from unofficial sellers who ask for remote access.

Follow these steps

  1. Install any pending AT&T plan

Go to Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) and open the AT&T plan marked Ready to be Installed, then follow Continue/Install on Wi‑Fi.

You should see: The AT&T eSIM installs and appears as a line, or a specific install error appears.

  2. Retry purchase only on official AT&T channels

If you still need to buy the plan, sign in to the official AT&T app or account site over Wi‑Fi and complete eSIM purchase/activation there rather than through random travel-deal sites.

You should see: AT&T accepts the order or explains an eligibility block.

  3. Ask AT&T to resend the eSIM

If checkout fails from Italy, contact AT&T through an official support path and ask them to re-push the eSIM QR or installation profile to your iPhone.

You should see: A fresh install prompt or QR becomes available.

  4. Confirm lock status if you need a local eSIM

If your goal is an Italy local eSIM rather than AT&T, check Settings > General > About for Carrier Lock and only install a local plan if the iPhone is unlocked.

You should see: You know whether a non-AT&T eSIM can work on this device.

Extra tips

What to look for: AT&T Cellular Plan Ready to be Installed, purchase errors on AT&T’s site, and whether the iPhone is carrier-locked

Before you change anything: Stay on trusted Wi‑Fi while installing an eSIM. Do not delete your primary eSIM unless you know how to restore it. Use only AT&T’s official app or site for AT&T plans. Confirm whether you need AT&T roaming or a local Italy eSIM.
