How do I clear a stuck carrier voicemail notification after canceling the service?

Answer

Open the Phone/Voicemail app and clear or delete the stale messages, turn Visual Voicemail off and on, then restart the phone. If the badge remains, reset network settings or ask the carrier to remove the old mailbox from the line.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Deleting voicemail entries permanently removes those recordings from the phone’s visual inbox.
  • Resetting network settings removes saved Wi-Fi networks.

Follow these steps

  1. Clear old voicemail entries

Open the Phone or Voicemail app, delete leftover messages, and clear the notification shade items related to voicemail.

You should see: Visible messages are gone, or the badge remains with an empty list.

  2. Toggle visual voicemail

In Phone settings, turn Visual Voicemail off, wait 30 seconds, turn it back on, or leave it off if the service was canceled.

You should see: The stuck indicator drops after the refresh.

  3. Restart the phone

Power off fully, wait 30 seconds, and power on again.

You should see: The voicemail badge stays cleared.

  4. Ask the carrier to drop the mailbox

If it returns, contact the carrier and ask them to remove the old voicemail platform from the line; reset network settings only if they recommend it.

You should see: The unavailable mailbox state is removed server-side.

Extra tips

What to look for: A persistent voicemail badge, this mailbox is unavailable when dialing voicemail, and Visual Voicemail still enabled for a canceled service.

Before you change anything: Confirm the answering service was canceled on the account. Note any messages you still need before deleting them. Back up Wi-Fi passwords if you reset network settings. Use official carrier support if the badge returns after local clears.
