How do I reset an AT&T voicemail PIN when the phone asks for a passcode?

Answer

If AT&T voicemail asks for a passcode or says to contact the system manager, reset the voicemail PIN in your official AT&T account first, then restart the phone and set up voicemail again by holding 1 in the Phone app. Do not guess PINs repeatedly if the mailbox may lock.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Resetting voicemail may remove saved greetings or require you to set up the mailbox again.

Follow these steps

  1. Reset the PIN in the AT&T account

Sign in at the official AT&T website or myAT&T app, open the line’s voicemail or Visual Voicemail settings, and choose reset PIN or reset voicemail password. Follow only the prompts shown in the official account.

You should see: AT&T confirms the voicemail PIN was reset or is ready to be created on the phone.

  2. Restart the phone

Power the phone fully off, wait about 30 seconds, then turn it back on and wait until the network signal returns.

You should see: The phone reconnects to AT&T before you try voicemail again.

  3. Open voicemail from the Phone app

Open the Phone app and press and hold 1, or dial your own number and follow the voicemail prompts. Create a new PIN when asked and finish any greeting setup.

You should see: Voicemail accepts the new PIN and opens the mailbox or Visual Voicemail inbox.

  4. Retry Visual Voicemail if it still fails

If the Visual Voicemail app still cannot open, clear its app cache or update it from the Play Store, then open it again after the PIN setup call succeeds.

You should see: Visual Voicemail opens without asking you to contact a system manager.

Extra tips

What to look for: Prompts that say a passcode is required, contact the system manager, or that Visual Voicemail cannot open until a PIN is set.

Before you change anything: Confirm the line is AT&T and you can sign into the AT&T account that owns the number. Have the phone with that SIM or eSIM nearby. Avoid random PIN guesses that could lock the mailbox. Never share the voicemail PIN with unexpected callers.
