How do I set up or recover a voicemail access code on a new phone?

Answer

Voicemail access codes are controlled by the mobile carrier, not by the phone brand alone. Call the carrier’s voicemail number from the new phone, use the carrier app or account tools to reset the PIN, or ask carrier support to reset voicemail access for that line.

Follow these steps

  1. Try the carrier’s standard voicemail dial-in

From the new phone, open the Phone app and use the carrier’s usual voicemail method (often tap and hold 1, or dial the voicemail access number printed in the carrier’s help pages). Follow any first-time setup prompts.

You should see: Voicemail opens or clearly asks for a PIN / new PIN setup.

  2. Reset the PIN in the carrier app or account

Sign in to the official carrier app or website, open the voicemail or line settings for that number, and use Reset voicemail password / PIN if available.

You should see: A new PIN is set, or the account shows that a reset was applied.

  3. Check visual voicemail after the PIN works

If dial-in voicemail works, open the Phone app’s Voicemail tab (iPhone) or the carrier visual voicemail app and allow it to finish setup on cellular or Wi‑Fi as required.

You should see: Visual voicemail loads messages, or only dial-in works and visual voicemail needs a separate carrier fix.

  4. Ask the carrier to reset voicemail access

If the PIN is locked or menus are missing after a phone upgrade, contact the carrier with the mobile number and explain that new phones cannot complete voicemail setup. Request a voicemail PIN reset on the line.

You should see: Carrier support resets voicemail access so setup can be completed on the new phone.

Extra tips

What to look for: Any on-screen prompt for a voicemail password/PIN, the carrier’s listed voicemail access number, and whether visual voicemail in the Phone app also fails.

Before you change anything: Confirm which carrier and phone number own the voicemail box. Have account verification details ready for the carrier, but never give codes to unexpected callers. Note whether visual voicemail, dial-in voicemail, or both are failing. Avoid third-party “voicemail unlock” apps or links.
