How do I find a device on my account when its time shows January 1 and it looks out of sync?
Answer
A device stuck on January 1 often has lost network time sync; you can usually still find it in Find My or the Apple Account device list, then fix date settings once you have physical access.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Erasing a device from Find My removes your ability to locate it afterward.
Follow these steps
Open Find My or the Apple Account device list
On another Apple device open the Find My app, or on a computer sign into iCloud.com or account.apple.com and open the devices list for your Apple ID.
You should see: Your devices appear, including the one with the odd sync or battery details.
Select the device and check its status
Tap or click the device name and note whether it is online, offline, last seen, and any battery information.
You should see: You can tell whether the device can be located now or only shows an older last-seen status.
Play sound or get directions if it is nearby
If the device is marked nearby or online, use Play Sound or Directions in Find My to recover it before changing settings.
You should see: The device is found physically, or you confirm it is not nearby.
Fix Date & Time once you have the device
On the device, go to Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically, and confirm it has Wi‑Fi or cellular service so network time can update.
You should see: The clock jumps to the correct date and time.
Confirm the device appears normally again
After the time is correct, reopen Find My or the account devices page and confirm the device name, sync time, and status look normal.
You should see: The device shows a sensible last-updated time on the account profile.

Extra tips
What to look for: A device listed under your Apple Account or Find My with an odd last-sync time, a clock stuck near 01/01, and an option to add or view more devices.
Before you change anything: Sign into the same Apple ID used on the missing or confused device. Prefer Find My on another Apple device or iCloud.com. Do not erase the device until you have tried locating it. Note battery percentage and last sync time if shown.
