How do I recover deleted text messages on an iPhone?

Answer

On recent iPhone software, check Recently Deleted in Messages first. If the thread is gone there, restore from an iCloud or computer backup made before the deletion. There is usually no separate Messages browse view under Photos.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Restoring an old backup can erase newer photos, texts, and apps created after that backup.
  • Third-party message-recovery apps are often ineffective or unsafe.

Follow these steps

  1. Check Recently Deleted in Messages

Open Messages, tap Edit or Filters, and open Recently Deleted. Select the threads and tap Recover if they are still listed.

You should see: The deleted conversations return to Messages, or Recently Deleted is empty.

  2. Check iCloud backup dates

Go to Settings > your name > iCloud > Manage Account Storage > Backups and see whether a backup exists from before the messages were deleted.

You should see: You know if a usable backup is available.

  3. Restore from backup only if needed

If Recently Deleted fails and a good backup exists, back up current data if possible, then erase the iPhone and restore from the backup that still contains the messages.

You should see: The older messages reappear after restore, understanding newer items may roll back.

  4. Avoid fake recovery shortcuts

Skip third-party tools that demand Apple ID passwords up front. If no backup and no Recently Deleted items exist, Apple generally cannot reconstruct those texts.

You should see: You either recover through Apple’s paths or confirm the messages are unrecoverable.

Extra tips

What to look for: A Recently Deleted folder in Messages, the date of the latest iCloud backup, and whether Messages in iCloud is enabled.

Before you change anything: Stop using the phone heavily if you may restore a full backup, because newer data can be overwritten. Check backup dates before restoring. Use official Apple settings rather than third-party recovery apps when possible. Never give Apple ID codes to unexpected helpers.
