How do I fix an iPhone that will not work or shows service suspended?

Answer

First separate a phone hardware or iOS problem from a carrier account suspension. If the iPhone turns on but says service is suspended, check the official carrier account. If it will not turn on, charge, force-restart, and then use recovery options only if those fail.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Erasing or restoring an iPhone can delete local data that is not backed up to iCloud or a computer.
  • Do not pay unlock fees or share one-time codes requested by unexpected texts, popups, or callers.

Follow these steps

  1. Decide whether the phone powers on

Connect the iPhone to a wall charger for at least 15 minutes. Watch for a battery icon, Apple logo, or any on-screen status.

You should see: The phone shows a charging indicator or home screen, or it stays fully unresponsive.

  2. Force-restart a frozen or black-screen iPhone

Use Apple’s force-restart sequence for your iPhone model: quickly press volume up, volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. Do not slide to power off if the logo already appears.

You should see: The iPhone restarts to the lock screen, or it remains stuck on a black screen or logo.

  3. Check for a carrier suspension message

If the phone turns on, open Settings > Cellular or look at the status bar for Service Suspended, No Service, or similar wording. Then sign in to the official carrier account on Wi-Fi and check for past-due balance or line suspension.

You should see: You can tell whether the problem is an account suspension or a phone software issue.

  4. Restore service on the carrier account if needed

If the account shows suspended or past due, pay any verified balance only inside the official carrier app or website, then restart the iPhone and wait a few minutes for the line to return.

You should see: Cellular service returns after the account is active again, or the carrier still shows a restriction to resolve.

  5. Use official recovery if the iPhone still will not start

If the phone never reaches the lock screen after charging and a force restart, follow Apple’s recovery-mode steps on a computer, or visit Apple Support or a carrier store with the exact symptoms and any service-suspended message.

You should see: The iPhone restores through recovery, or a technician confirms a hardware or account next step.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether the iPhone powers on, any Service Suspended or No Service message, and whether the carrier account shows an unpaid balance or suspension.

Before you change anything: Note the exact status text on the iPhone status bar or Settings > Cellular. Connect a known-good Lightning or USB-C charger and cable. Have the carrier account login ready on another device if possible. Do not erase the iPhone until you understand what data may be lost.
