What should you do when an iPhone screen appears locked?

Before you start: stop right away if…
- Third-party iPhone unlock services are commonly scams and can brick or compromise the device.
- Erasing an iPhone without the Apple ID will not bypass Activation Lock.
Follow these steps
Identify the lock type
Read the screen carefully: passcode dots, Disabled, or Activation Lock / iPhone Locked to Owner.
You should see: You know which unlock path applies.
Unlock with biometrics or passcode
If Face ID/Touch ID fails, enter the device passcode. After failed Face ID attempts, swipe up or tap Passcode when offered.
You should see: The Home Screen opens, or you see Disabled after too many tries.
Wait out a Disabled timer
If the phone says Disabled and shows a timer, wait for the timer to end before trying the correct passcode again.
You should see: Passcode entry becomes available again.
Erase via Finder/iTunes or iCloud only if needed
If the passcode is unknown, use Apple’s official erase/recovery flow, then sign in with the Apple ID that owns Activation Lock.
You should see: The phone resets and can be set up with the correct Apple ID.
Resolve Activation Lock with the owner account
If Locked to Owner appears, sign in with that Apple ID or ask the previous owner to remove the device from their account.
You should see: Activation Lock clears and setup continues.
