How do I figure out why an iPhone is not working?

Answer

Start by naming the exact symptom: no power, frozen screen, or something else. A black screen often needs a force restart; a frozen display may need the same; cellular or settings problems use different paths. Matching the symptom to the right branch avoids random resets.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Erase iPhone or recovery-mode restore can delete data that is not backed up.

Follow these steps

  1. Identify the symptom branch

Decide which description fits best: will not turn on at all, screen frozen on one image, turns on but has no cellular service, or something else. Write that down before changing settings.

You should see: You have one clear symptom category to follow instead of mixed advice.

  2. If it will not turn on, charge and watch for a response

Connect a known-good charger for at least 15 minutes. Look for a battery icon or the Apple logo. Then try turning it on with the side button.

You should see: A charge icon or Apple logo appears, or the phone still stays fully black.

  3. If the screen is frozen, force restart

Quickly press and release volume up, quickly press and release volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. Do not slide to power off if the screen is unresponsive.

You should see: The phone restarts and the touchscreen responds again.

  4. If it turns on but still misbehaves, check Settings clues

Open Settings and note any Cellular, Screen Time, or update prompts. Update iOS if offered, or toggle Airplane mode once if the problem is no service.

You should see: You either restore basic function or have a specific Settings label to research next.

  5. Escalate only after basic recovery fails

If the phone stays black after charging and a force restart, or keeps freezing immediately, use Apple Support or an authorized repair path rather than random third-party unlock tools.

You should see: You have a safe next step without risking data loss from unofficial tools.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether the screen is black, frozen on one image, showing a charge icon, or open to Settings with a specific error.

Before you change anything: Note the exact model if known (for example iPhone 14) and what happens when you press the side button. Charge with a known-good cable and adapter for at least 15 minutes before assuming hardware failure. Back up if the phone still unlocks and you may need a reset later. Never share Apple ID passwords or verification codes with unexpected callers.
