EmailAccounts & Passwords

How do I fix an email account that will not let me sign in?

Answer

Start by signing in only on the official mail site or app, then use Forgot password if the saved password fails. If you keep seeing a wrong code message, wait before requesting more codes and try a private browser window.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Never share verification codes, passwords, or recovery phrases with unexpected callers or texts claiming to be email support.

Follow these steps

  1. Sign in on the official site

Open a private or incognito browser window and go directly to your email provider’s official sign-in page (or reopen the official mail app). Enter the full email address carefully.

You should see: You reach a standard password or verification prompt without a suspicious redirect.

  2. Try a fresh password attempt

Type the password manually instead of using autofill. If it fails, choose Forgot password and follow the provider’s recovery steps.

You should see: Either you sign in, or recovery sends a reset link or code to a method you still control.

  3. Handle a wrong-code error

If the screen says wrong code, wait about 10 minutes without requesting more codes, then request one new code and enter it immediately without spaces.

You should see: A single fresh code is accepted, or you get a clearer error than repeated wrong-code failures.

  4. Use the provider’s sign-in helper if offered

If your provider shows a Sign-in Helper or account recovery tool, open it from the official site, enter the email address, and follow only the on-screen recovery options.

You should see: You regain access or learn which recovery option is still available for the account.

  5. Update saved passwords after success

Once you are in, update the password in your browser or phone password manager so the old saved password is not reused.

You should see: Future sign-ins use the working password without another lockout loop.

Extra tips

What to look for: A wrong code message, a looping sign-in page, or a screen that rejects the password without explaining why.

Before you change anything: Confirm which provider you use (Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, or another) and the exact email address. Use only the official website or app—never a link from an unexpected email or text. Have access to the recovery phone or alternate email if one is on file. Never share passwords or one-time codes with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
