How do I add a new credit card as a payment method on my phone?

Answer

Add the card in the wallet or payment settings for the account you actually use for purchases (Apple Wallet / Apple ID on iPhone, or Google Pay / Google account payments on Android). Enter the billing details exactly, then retry. If Add payment method does nothing, update the OS/app and check that the bank card is eligible for mobile wallets.

Follow these steps

  1. Open the correct payment settings

On iPhone, open Wallet or Settings > [your name] > Payment & Shipping (for Apple ID purchases), depending on whether you need tap-to-pay or App Store billing. On Android, open Google Wallet or the Google account Payments section. Use the screen that matches how you plan to pay.

You should see: You see an Add payment method, Add card, or similar option for the right account.

  2. Enter the card and billing details carefully

Tap Add payment method, then enter the card number, expiration, security code, and billing address exactly as the bank has them. Avoid extra spaces and confirm the country/region is correct before saving.

You should see: The card verifies and appears in the payment methods list.

  3. Retry after an update if nothing happens

If Add payment method does nothing, install any available iOS or Android system update and update Wallet/Play Store related apps, restart the phone, and try adding the card once more.

You should see: The add-card flow opens fully and either saves the card or shows a readable error.

  4. Test another card or bank contactless support

If one card is declined, try a different eligible card. For tap-to-pay wallets, confirm with your bank that the card supports mobile wallet use in your country.

You should see: A supported card adds successfully, or the bank confirms the first card is blocked for wallets.

  5. Confirm the card is selected where you pay

After the card is saved, open the app or checkout screen that failed before and select the new card as the default or active payment method.

You should see: Checkout or tap-to-pay offers the new card without the previous add-card failure.

Extra tips

What to look for: What happens when you tap Add payment method—an error message, a spinning save that fails, or no response at all—and whether you are in Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, or an app store payment screen.

Before you change anything: Confirm whether the phone is an iPhone or Android device. Know which account (Apple ID or Google) should own the card. Have the card number, expiration, security code, and billing address ready. Only enter card details in the phone’s official Settings, Wallet, or store payment screens.
