How do I recover a deleted text message on an iPhone?

Answer

Check Messages > Filters > Recently Deleted first; Apple keeps deleted messages there for a limited time. If the thread never appears there, restore from an iCloud or computer backup made before the deletion—there is no guaranteed recovery after that window.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Restoring a backup can replace newer messages, photos, and app data on the iPhone.
  • Stop if a website or app asks for payment or your Apple ID password to “unlock” deleted texts.

Follow these steps

  1. Check Recently Deleted in Messages

Open Messages, tap Filters or Edit / Filters (wording varies by iOS), then open Recently Deleted. Select the conversation or message and tap Recover.

You should see: The deleted message returns to Messages, or the folder is empty / does not list that thread.

  2. Search Messages and the contact thread

In Messages, search for a unique phrase from the long text and open the contact’s conversation to confirm it was fully deleted rather than buried in a long thread.

You should see: You either find the message still on the phone or confirm it is gone.

  3. Check whether Messages in iCloud is on

Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Messages (or See All > Messages) and note whether Messages in iCloud is enabled. If it is, deletions usually sync across your Apple devices.

You should see: You know whether other Apple devices would also have deleted the same message.

  4. Restore from a backup made before deletion

If Recently Deleted is empty, restore an iCloud or computer backup created before you deleted the message. Restoring replaces current phone data with that older snapshot, so back up today’s device first if you need a safety copy of newer items.

You should see: After restore, the old conversation reappears, or you learn no suitable backup exists.

  5. Ask the sender to resend if no backup exists

If there is no pre-deletion backup, ask the other person to resend the text or screenshots. Treat paid “recovery” tools that promise miracles without a backup as unreliable.

You should see: You regain the content from the sender, or accept that the local copy cannot be recovered.

Extra tips

What to look for: A Recently Deleted folder in Messages, the approximate deletion time, and whether iCloud Messages or a recent encrypted computer backup exists.

Before you change anything: Stop sending new important texts you cannot afford to lose if you may restore a backup. Note the approximate date and time you deleted the message. Do not erase the iPhone until you know which backup you will use. Avoid third-party “message recovery” apps that demand full device trust or payment up front.
