How do I unlock an iPhone stuck after a Control Center button press?

Answer

This often means Guided Access, Screen Time app limits, or a Focus mode was turned on from Control Center or Accessibility. Exit Guided Access with a side-button triple-click and passcode, or turn off the Focus that is silencing calls.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Do not erase the iPhone until Guided Access, Focus, and a force restart have been tried.

Follow these steps

  1. Try ending Guided Access

Triple-click the side button (or Home button on older models). If Guided Access appears, enter the Guided Access passcode, then tap End.

You should see: The lock ends and you can use the Home Screen and Control Center normally.

  2. Turn off Focus or Do Not Disturb

Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center (or up from the bottom on older iPhones). Tap any highlighted Focus, Do Not Disturb, or Sleep mode to turn it off.

You should see: Calls and notifications can ring again instead of going only to voicemail.

  3. Force restart if the screen stays frozen

Quickly press and release Volume Up, quickly press and release Volume Down, then press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. Do not slide to power off if that option is unavailable.

You should see: The iPhone reboots and returns to the Lock Screen.

  4. Review Accessibility shortcuts afterward

After you regain control, go to Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut and Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access. Turn off shortcuts you do not want to trigger from Control Center or triple-click.

You should see: You can see whether Guided Access or another shortcut was enabled and prevent it from locking the phone again.

Extra tips

What to look for: A Guided Access, Screen Time, or Focus label; whether only one app responds; and whether Control Center still shows a moon or Focus icon.

Before you change anything: Note the exact on-screen message before force-restarting. Try Guided Access exit and Focus off before erasing the phone. Avoid sharing any passcode with unexpected callers. A force restart does not erase data, but a reset or erase does.
