How do I reconnect after an iPhone call or Messages chat drops mid-conversation?

Answer

First decide whether the drop was a phone call or an iMessage/SMS thread. Redial or open the same Messages conversation, confirm signal or Wi‑Fi, then send a new message or place a new call. If nothing sends, check Airplane Mode, network status, and whether Messages shows a send failure.

Follow these steps

  1. Identify what disconnected

Check Recents in the Phone app and the conversation in Messages. Decide whether you need to place a new call or send a new text/iMessage.

You should see: You know whether to redial or reopen the Messages thread.

  2. Reconnect the simple way

Redial the person from Recents, or open the same Messages conversation and send a short new message such as “Can you hear me now?”

You should see: The call connects again, or the message shows Sent/Delivered.

  3. Check for a network drop

If the call fails or the message stays undelivered, confirm Airplane Mode is off, wait for signal or Wi‑Fi to return, then toggle Airplane Mode on for 15 seconds and off again before retrying.

You should see: Signal returns and a new call or message goes through.

  4. Confirm Messages can send at all

Send a test message to yourself or another known contact. If every message fails, go to Settings > Messages and confirm iMessage can activate, then try SMS to a phone number.

You should see: You learn whether the problem is one conversation or all messaging.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether the drop was a voice/FaceTime call or a Messages chat, any Not Delivered error, and whether the status bar shows signal or Wi‑Fi.

Before you change anything: Note whether you were on a cellular call, FaceTime, or Messages. Avoid signing out of iMessage or resetting network settings as a first step. Confirm you are contacting the same phone number or Apple ID conversation. Never share verification codes from Messages with unexpected callers.
