Why does a TV have no picture from cable when the TV itself turns on?
Answer
If the TV turns on with a direct plug but cable or HDMI shows no signal, the problem is usually the input source, HDMI cable or port, or the cable box—not a dead TV power supply.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Do not open the TV for power repairs; internal capacitors can be dangerous.
Follow these steps
Select the correct HDMI input
Using the TV remote, open Source or Input and choose the HDMI port where the cable box is plugged in. Cycle through each HDMI if you are unsure which port is used.
You should see: You either see the cable guide or picture, or a clear No Signal message on the intended input.
Reseat or swap the HDMI cable
Power off the TV and box, unplug both ends of the HDMI cable, plug them firmly back in, then power on the box first and the TV second. If possible, try a different HDMI cable.
You should see: The picture returns, or the same no-signal message persists with a known cable.
Try another HDMI port on the TV
Move the cable to a different HDMI port on the TV and switch the TV input to that port. This checks whether one TV port has failed.
You should see: Picture works on the new port, or no port works and attention shifts to the box or cable line.
Power-cycle the cable or streaming box
Unplug the cable or streaming box from power for one full minute, then plug it back in and wait until it finishes booting before checking the TV input again.
You should see: The box finishes startup and HDMI video appears, or the provider equipment still fails to output video.

Extra tips
What to look for: Messages like No Signal or No HDMI, which HDMI input is selected, and whether the cable box front lights are on
Before you change anything: Note which HDMI port and cable you are using. Keep the TV on a known-good wall outlet. Do not open the TV chassis. Avoid support calls that ask for remote access to your smart TV account.
