How do I pair a Garmin Fenix 8 with an Edge 1030 for Extended Display?
Answer
Extended Display only works when both devices support it, Bluetooth is free of leftover pairings, and you start the connection from the Edge while the watch is awake and nearby. Clear any old Fenix pairing on the Edge, then retry from the Edge’s Extended Display or Sensors menu.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Avoid a full factory reset on the Edge or watch until you have tried removing only the old sensor pairing.
Follow these steps
Update both devices
In Garmin Connect (or Garmin Express for the Edge), install any pending software updates for the Fenix 8 and Edge 1030, then restart both devices.
You should see: Both devices report they are up to date and finish restarting.
Remove an old watch pairing on the Edge
On the Edge, open Sensors (or Connections), find any existing Fenix, watch, or Extended Display entry, and remove or forget it.
You should see: The old watch entry is gone and the Edge is ready to search again.
Start Extended Display from the Edge
Keep the Fenix unlocked and awake. On the Edge, open the Extended Display or Sensors menu and choose to add or search for a watch, then select the Fenix when it appears.
You should see: The Edge finds the Fenix and prompts you to confirm pairing on one or both devices.
Confirm pairing on the watch
On the Fenix, accept the Bluetooth pairing request if shown, then return to the Edge and confirm the watch is connected for Extended Display.
You should see: The Edge shows the Fenix as connected and Extended Display becomes available for a ride.
Retry after a Bluetooth reset if it still fails
If nothing appears, turn Bluetooth off and on on both devices, move them within 1–2 feet, and repeat the Edge-led search once more.
You should see: The Fenix appears in the Edge search list, or you see a clear status you can use with Garmin support.

Extra tips
What to look for: Whether the Edge lists Extended Display or a Fenix/watch sensor at all, whether Bluetooth on both devices is on, and any silent failure with no error text.
Before you change anything: Confirm both the Fenix 8 and Edge 1030 software are updated in Garmin Connect / Garmin Express. Note any existing bike sensors already paired to the Edge so you do not remove the wrong ones. Have the watch charged and unlocked during pairing. Do not factory-reset the Edge or watch unless simpler pairing steps fail.
