How do I protect an iPhone that was stolen?

Immediately use Find My on iCloud.com or another Apple device to Mark as Lost, change the Apple ID password, and remove payment methods you can. Then report the theft to the carrier and local police so the line can be suspended and a report is on file.
Before you start: stop right away if…

- Erasing the iPhone can stop location updates; use Mark as Lost first unless Apple or police guidance says otherwise.
Follow these steps
Mark the iPhone as Lost in Find My
On another Apple device open Find My, or go to iCloud.com/find on a trusted browser, select the missing iPhone, and choose Mark as Lost. Set a passcode if prompted and add a phone number where you can be reached.
You should see: The iPhone is locked with a Lost Mode message and appears as lost in Find My.
Change the Apple ID password
Change the Apple ID password at appleid.apple.com (or Settings on a trusted device you still have). Sign out of other unknown sessions if Apple shows them.
You should see: The Apple ID password is updated and Activation Lock remains tied to that account.
Secure payments and subscriptions
In Wallet & Apple Account settings on a remaining device, or via Apple ID web settings, remove or suspend payment methods and watch for unexpected Apple Pay or App Store charges.
You should see: Stored cards are removed or monitored so the thief cannot easily charge them.
Suspend service with the carrier
Contact the carrier through its official app, website, or the number on a bill. Report the phone stolen and ask to suspend the line and block the IMEI if that service is offered.
You should see: The carrier suspends the line and notes the device as stolen.
File a police report
Report the theft to local police (including travel location details if it happened while away). Keep the report number for insurance or carrier replacement requests.
You should see: You have an official report number documenting the theft.
