What should I try when a TV will not power on at all?

Answer

Power-cycle the TV by unplugging it for two minutes, then plug it into a different wall outlet and use the TV’s own power button. That sequence usually separates a simple power problem from a TV that needs service.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Stop using the outlet and unplug the TV if the plug, cord, or outlet feels hot or smells burned.

Follow these steps

  1. Disconnect power for two minutes

Unplug the TV from the wall and leave it unplugged for 2 full minutes so the set can fully power down.

You should see: The TV is completely without power for the full wait time.

  2. Use a different wall outlet

Plug the TV directly into a different wall outlet, not through a power strip, surge protector, or extension cord.

You should see: The TV is connected to a direct wall outlet for testing.

  3. Press the TV power button

Turn the TV on with the button on the set itself. Look along the bottom edge, side, underside of the bezel, or near the logo if the button is hard to find.

You should see: The screen or a power light responds, or the TV still stays dark.

  4. Confirm the outlet and remote

If nothing happens, plug a lamp or charger into that outlet to verify power, then retry the remote with known-good batteries.

You should see: You can tell whether the outlet works and whether only the TV remains dead.

Extra tips

What to look for: Any standby LED activity, response to the TV power button, and whether another device works in the same outlet.

Before you change anything: Make sure the power cord is fully inserted at both the TV and the outlet. Test without a power strip first. Do not open the TV cabinet or replace internal parts unless you are qualified. Ignore popup sites that demand payment to “unlock” or repair the TV.
