Why does Roku keep saying to use another payment method after updating the card?

Answer

This usually means Roku still has a failed or incomplete card on file, the new card was not saved correctly, or the bank declined the authorization. Sign in on a phone or computer, add the new card as a fresh payment method, remove the old one, then retry the charge.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Only manage payment methods through Roku’s official account pages or app, not links from unexpected emails or texts.

Follow these steps

  1. Sign in on a browser

On a phone or computer, open the official Roku account site and sign in to the same account used on the Roku device.

You should see: The account dashboard loads, including billing or payment options.

  2. Add the new card fresh

Go to Payment method, add the new card as a new payment method, and carefully match the name, ZIP or postal code, and expiration date on the card.

You should see: The new card saves successfully, or Roku shows a clear decline reason.

  3. Remove the failed method

If an older or declined card is still listed, remove it so Roku cannot keep retrying the bad method.

You should see: Only the intended card remains as the active payment method.

  4. Retry the purchase or subscription

Return to the channel, subscription, or account charge that failed and try again with the newly saved card selected.

You should see: The charge succeeds, or the bank/Roku message becomes more specific about why it failed.

  5. Check with the bank if it still fails

If Roku still rejects the card, ask the bank whether online or recurring payments to Roku are blocked, then retry after any hold is cleared.

You should see: The bank confirms a block was lifted, or suggests a different card that allows the charge.

Extra tips

What to look for: An on-screen message such as “update your payment method” or “use another payment method,” plus whether the new card appears under Payment method in the Roku account.

Before you change anything: Have the new card details ready and confirm the billing address matches the bank. Sign in only at account.roku.com or through the official Roku account flow. Check with the bank if a recent Roku charge was blocked. Never share card details with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
