How do I restore dial tone when a home landline phone stops working?
Answer
Unplug every phone and related device from wall jacks, restart the modem or phone gateway, then test one known-good phone in one jack. If that phone gets dial tone, add devices back one at a time to find a bad phone or cord.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Do not insert metal objects into wall jacks or open sealed network interface hardware.
- If you smell burning or see damaged cords, stop and unplug power before continuing.
Follow these steps
Unplug all phones from wall jacks
Disconnect every phone, fax, answering machine, and splitter from every wall jack so nothing remains connected to the phone wiring.
You should see: All phone devices are unplugged and the line is unloaded.
Restart the modem or phone gateway
Unplug the modem or gateway power for about 60 seconds, plug it back in, and wait about five minutes until lights stabilize.
You should see: Modem lights return to their normal online pattern, including any phone/voice light if present.
Test one phone on one jack
Plug a single known-good phone into one wall jack or into the phone port on the modem if that is how your service is wired, then check for dial tone.
You should see: Dial tone returns, or there is still none on that isolated test.
Try a second jack and re-add devices
If there is no tone, try the same phone in a different jack. If there is tone, reconnect other phones one at a time until dial tone fails again to find the bad device or cord.
You should see: You identify a bad phone/cord, or confirm no jack has tone and the provider needs to check the line.

Extra tips
What to look for: No dial tone on the home phone, and modem or gateway indicator lights for phone or voice service
Before you change anything: Note whether internet still works while the phone does not. Have one simple corded phone available for testing if possible. Label which jack you test. Avoid opening provider network interface boxes sealed for technician use only.
