How do you get back into Instagram after two-factor authentication issues?
Answer
Use Instagram’s Try another way options with backup codes, an authentication app, or trusted email/SMS, then start official account recovery if those methods still fail after the waiting period.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Do not share Instagram login codes or backup codes with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
Follow these steps
Choose Try another way
On the Instagram login challenge, tap Try another way and list every method shown (SMS, WhatsApp, authentication app, backup codes).
You should see: Alternate verification methods appear.
Use a backup code if you have one
Enter an unused Instagram backup code exactly as saved when 2FA was enabled.
You should see: Instagram accepts the code and completes login.
Approve from an authenticator app
Open Google Authenticator, Authy, or the app you enrolled, and enter the current Instagram code before it refreshes.
You should see: Login succeeds without SMS.
Start official account recovery
If all methods fail, follow Instagram’s in-app Get help / account recovery and submit the identity check only on Meta’s official screens.
You should see: Instagram confirms a review or sends next-step email.
Secure 2FA after you regain access
Generate new backup codes, confirm the correct phone/email, and remove old authentication devices you no longer own.
You should see: Future logins have working recovery methods.

Extra tips
What to look for: Whether the screen offers Try another way, backup codes, or a review request after the 72-hour wait.
Before you change anything: Search email/files for Instagram backup codes. Use the official Instagram app or instagram.com only. Never send selfie videos to unofficial “recovery helpers.”
