Why can I log into Instagram on the web but not in the mobile app?

Answer

Confirm the two-factor method in Instagram on the web, then retry the app with one fresh code after updating or reinstalling the app; stale app sessions and 2FA mismatches are common causes.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Never send Instagram verification codes to people who contact you about a login problem.

Follow these steps

  1. Check two-factor settings on the web

While signed in on Instagram in a browser, open Accounts Center or Password and security and confirm which two-factor method is enabled.

You should see: You know whether codes come from SMS, an authenticator app, or another method.

  2. Update or reinstall the Instagram app

Update Instagram from the Play Store or App Store, or uninstall and reinstall it, then reopen the app.

You should see: A fresh app install is ready for sign-in.

  3. Sign in with one fresh code

Enter your username and password in the app, then enter only one newly generated two-factor code. Wait for a new code if the previous one expired.

You should see: The app signs in, or a clearer error appears.

  4. Clear app cache or try again later if attempts were throttled

On Android, clear the Instagram app cache in system settings if available, confirm automatic date and time, and retry after a short wait if too many attempts occurred.

You should see: The app accepts login like the browser does.

Extra tips

What to look for: Something went wrong in the app, successful web login, and the two-factor method shown under Accounts Center or Password and security

Before you change anything: Stay signed in on the web if possible while fixing the app. Check that the phone’s date and time are set automatically. Use only official Instagram/Meta settings pages. Do not share one-time codes with anyone who messages you about the login.
