How do I open Canon camcorder video files with an EVF extension on Windows?

On many AVCHD camcorders, playable clips are usually larger .MTS/.MPG files inside an AVCHD or SD_VIDEO folder—not small .EVF companion files. Show file extensions in File Explorer, copy the whole private folder structure from the card, then open the .MTS files in Films & TV, VLC, or Canon’s official software for your model.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Formatting the card in the computer can erase recordings permanently.
  • Install only players or Canon utilities from official sites—not random “EVF player” downloads.

Follow these steps

  1. Show extensions and open the card

    Insert the SD card via a reader. In File Explorer, enable View > Show > File name extensions. Open the card and look for AVCHD, PRIVATE, or SD_VIDEO folders.

    You should see: You can see full filenames and the camcorder’s media folders.

  2. Locate the large video files

    Browse into SD_VIDEO or AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM style folders and sort by size. Prefer .MTS, .MP4, or similarly large media files over tiny .EVF files.

  3. Copy the folder structure to the PC

    Copy the entire AVCHD/PRIVATE/SD_VIDEO folder to the computer rather than only one .EVF file. If a single-file copy fails, retry with a card reader and a different USB port.

  4. Play with a compatible app

    Open the large media files in Windows Films & TV, VLC media player, or Canon’s official software listed for your camcorder model. If only .EVF appears, search Canon’s support for that model’s file format guide.

    You should see: The recordings play, or Canon’s docs confirm the correct extension for your model.
