How do I update a Garmin T5 collar when WebUpdater will not detect it?
Answer
Use Garmin Express as the primary updater for the T5 collar—Garmin has moved many devices to Express, and WebUpdater is often unreliable for collars.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Unplugging mid-update can leave firmware incomplete—wait for Express to finish.
Follow these steps
Close WebUpdater
Quit Garmin WebUpdater completely so it is not locking the USB device.
You should see: Only Garmin Express will manage the collar.
Connect the collar to Express
Open Garmin Express, connect the T5 with a data USB cable, and wait until Express shows the collar by name/serial.
You should see: Express lists the T5 as connected.
Install updates in Express
Select the collar and install all offered software updates. Keep the collar plugged in until Express reports finished.
You should see: Updates complete successfully in Express.
Try another USB port if Express loses the device
If Express drops the collar, switch USB ports (prefer a rear PC port), try another cable, and reconnect.
You should see: The collar stays connected long enough to finish.
Skip WebUpdater going forward
For future collar updates, use Express only unless Garmin support specifically instructs otherwise for your serial.
You should see: You have a reliable update path without WebUpdater.

Extra tips
What to look for: The collar appearing in Garmin Express, and WebUpdater failing to list the same device
Before you change anything: Install current Garmin Express on Windows or Mac. Use a data-capable USB cable. Note the collar serial (including any 3S-style serial format) for support if needed.
