Why can't I create or sign in to an Apple TV account?

Answer

Apple TV uses your Apple Account rather than a separate login, so there is no new account to create. Sign in with the Apple Account you already use, and if that is refused, verify the account at Apple's account page — most failures are an unverified email, a wrong password, or a two-factor code that never arrived.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Never share a verification code with anyone who contacts you. Apple does not phone or message asking for one.

Follow these steps

  1. Use your existing Apple Account

Sign in with the Apple Account you already use for the App Store or iCloud rather than creating a new one.

You should see: The app accepts the address and asks for a password.

  2. Reset the password if it is refused

Use Apple's account recovery to set a new password, confirming your identity by the method offered.

You should see: Apple confirms the password has changed.

  3. Complete two-factor verification

Enter the six-digit code sent to a trusted device or phone number. If none arrives, choose the option to send it another way.

    You should see: Sign-in completes.

  4. Check the account details are verified

Sign in at Apple's account page and confirm the email address is verified and payment details are current.

You should see: No warnings remain on the account.

  5. Start the subscription from a signed-in device

Once signed in, subscribe from the Apple TV app. The subscription then follows the account onto other devices.

You should see: Apple TV content plays.

Extra tips

What to look for: The exact wording of the refusal — an incorrect password, an account that cannot be verified, and a region mismatch each point somewhere different.

Before you change anything: Make sure you can receive mail at the address on the Apple Account and texts on its trusted phone number.
