Why does an iPhone show SOS after switching carriers?

Answer

SOS after a carrier change usually means the iPhone cannot register on the new line yet—often because the eSIM/line is off, carrier settings have not finished updating, or the network needs a refresh. Toggle Airplane Mode, confirm the line is on under Cellular, restart, then wait on Settings > General > About for carrier settings.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Erasing the iPhone can remove data; only reset network settings or erase as a later step after backup if support directs you.

Follow these steps

  1. Refresh the radio with Airplane Mode

Open Control Center or Settings, turn Airplane Mode on for about 10 seconds, then turn it off and wait for signal bars or SOS to update.

You should see: The status bar leaves SOS, or still shows SOS after the radio restarts.

  2. Confirm the carrier line is turned on

Go to Settings > Cellular and make sure the new carrier line or eSIM (for example the AT&T line) is turned on, not disabled.

You should see: The intended line shows as on and available for voice and data.

  3. Restart the iPhone

Power the iPhone 12 fully off, wait about 30 seconds, then turn it back on and check the status bar again.

You should see: Cellular registration retries and SOS may clear after reboot.

  4. Wait on the About screen for carrier settings

Go to Settings > General > About and stay on that screen for about 30 seconds so iOS can check for a Carrier Settings Update, then install it if prompted.

You should see: A carrier settings update appears, or About finishes loading with no update and the signal status is clearer.

  5. Recheck Cellular status after the update

Return to Settings > Cellular and confirm the line still shows active, then place a test call or check whether SOS is gone.

You should see: Normal carrier signal returns, or SOS remains and the carrier needs to refresh the SIM/eSIM profile.

Extra tips

What to look for: SOS or SOS only in the status bar, whether the carrier line/eSIM is turned on under Settings > Cellular, and any Carrier Settings Update prompt after opening Settings > General > About.

Before you change anything: Confirm the new carrier says the line is active on their side. Know whether the iPhone 12 is using a physical SIM, eSIM, or both. Stay on Wi‑Fi if you need to reach carrier support while cellular is down. Do not erase the iPhone unless carrier support specifically asks after backups are confirmed.
