Why does a NordicTrack C1650 treadmill show a running program but the belt does not move?
Answer
When the console counts a workout but the belt stays still, the safety key, power reset, or drive/incline system is usually the issue—not the on-screen program itself. Reseat the safety key, hard-reset power for several minutes, and retry Start from the side rails. If the belt still never engages, stop and use warranty service rather than forcing motor work.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Stand on the side rails during Start tests. A belt that suddenly engages can cause a fall.
- Opening the motor hood or replacing controllers yourself can void warranty and risks electrical shock.
Follow these steps
Reseat the safety key
Remove the safety key, wait 10 seconds, then insert it fully until the console recognizes it. Clip the cord to your clothing only after the belt test succeeds.
You should see: The console shows ready status and no safety-key warning.
Hard power reset
Turn the treadmill power switch off, unplug it from the wall, and wait at least 5 minutes. Plug it back in, turn it on, insert the safety key, stand on the side rails, and press Start.
You should see: The belt begins moving at a slow start speed.
Test without iFIT dependency
Start a basic manual workout on the console rather than an iFIT studio class. This separates subscription/internet issues from belt-drive failure.
You should see: Manual Start either moves the belt or still shows a running program with a stationary belt.
Stop and contact support if belt never engages
If the console runs but the belt never moves after a power reset and seated safety key, unplug the machine and contact NordicTrack/iFIT support or warranty service. Do not keep repeatedly starting against a seized belt.
You should see: Support schedules repair or provides model-specific next diagnostics.

Extra tips
What to look for: Safety key seating, console countdown without belt motion, absence of error codes, and whether the incline motor responds at all.
Before you change anything: Unplug the treadmill before inspecting cables under the console. Keep children and pets away during tests. Stand on the side rails, not the belt, when pressing Start. Do not open the motor cover if the machine is under warranty unless support instructs it.
