Why is mobile data so slow after switching to a new phone?
Answer
Confirm 5G/LTE is enabled, reset network settings, and reinsert or redownload the SIM/eSIM. Slow data after a transfer is often an APN or carrier-settings issue rather than a bad phone.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Reset Network Settings erases saved Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth pairings.
- Do not install third-party “signal booster” APKs from unknown sites.
Follow these steps
Check network mode and signal
Open mobile network settings and enable 5G/LTE (not 3G-only). Confirm you see LTE/5G indicators, not just EDGE/H+.
You should see: The phone camps on a modern data network.
Toggle data and Airplane Mode
Turn mobile data off and on, then use Airplane Mode for 20 seconds. Retest a speed-sensitive app.
You should see: Data reconnects cleanly after re-registration.
Update carrier settings / APN
Install any carrier settings update. If APN fields are empty or wrong, reset APNs to default or redownload the eSIM from the carrier.
You should see: APN matches carrier defaults and data improves.
Reset network settings
Use Reset Network Settings, rejoin Wi-Fi, and retest cellular data. Contact the carrier with the new IMEI if speeds stay poor in areas that worked before.
You should see: Data speeds return to normal, or the carrier reprovisions the line.

Extra tips
What to look for: Cellular data is much slower on the new phone than on the old one, while Wi-Fi may still be fine.
Before you change anything: Note whether Wi-Fi speeds are normal. Know your carrier account PIN before resetting network settings (Wi-Fi passwords will be erased). Test speed in the same location as before.
