Why is a security camera recording still images instead of video?

Answer

This is almost always a storage or subscription change rather than a fault. Cameras fall back to still snapshots when the memory card is full or unreadable, or when a cloud plan that included video recording has lapsed. Check the card and the plan status in the app first.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Formatting a memory card permanently erases everything on it. Download what you need first.

Follow these steps

  1. Check storage in the app

Open the camera's settings and look at the storage or SD card section for free space and card health.

You should see: You see whether the card is full or reporting an error.

  2. Check the recording plan

Look at the subscription status. Video recording is often a paid feature while snapshots are free.

You should see: You know whether a lapsed plan explains it.

  3. Save anything you need, then format the card

Download recordings you want to keep, then format the card from within the app rather than on a computer.

You should see: The card reports full free space.

  4. Confirm the recording mode

In settings, check the event recording type is set to video rather than snapshot.

You should see: Video is selected.

  5. Replace the card if errors persist

Memory cards wear out under constant recording. Fit a new card rated for continuous video use.

You should see: Video clips record again.

Extra tips

What to look for: The storage status in the app's device settings, and whether the change coincided with a subscription renewal date.

Before you change anything: Download any recordings you want to keep before reformatting a card, as formatting erases everything on it.
