Why is a webcam not working in a browser video call?
Answer
When the microphone works and the camera does not, another application is almost always holding the camera. Close every other app that can use it — video call software, camera apps, streaming tools — then reload the page. Cameras can generally only be used by one application at a time.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Never install a 'camera fix' tool offered by a pop-up during a call. These are a common malware route.
Follow these steps
Close anything else that uses the camera
Quit other video call apps, camera or webcam utilities, and streaming software — including ones only sitting in the system tray.
You should see: The camera indicator light goes out.
Reload the page
Refresh the appointment page and allow the camera if prompted.
You should see: A preview of your camera appears.
Check the browser picked the right camera
In the site's or browser's camera settings, confirm the correct device is selected rather than a virtual camera.
You should see: The intended camera is selected.
Check the privacy switch
Look for a physical shutter or a keyboard camera-disable key, and check the operating system's camera privacy setting allows browser access.
You should see: Nothing is blocking the camera at system level.
Restart and test early
If it still fails, restart the computer and open only the browser, then test before the appointment time.
You should see: The camera works with nothing else competing for it.

Extra tips
What to look for: Whether the camera's indicator light is already on before you join, which means something else has it.
Before you change anything: If this is a scheduled appointment, start testing ten minutes early so there is time to restart if needed.
