Why will an iPhone 8 SIM card not fit in an iPhone XR?

iPhone 8 and iPhone XR both use nano-SIM cards, so a true nano-SIM should fit the XR tray. If it will not fit, the card is probably still attached to a larger adapter, cut unevenly, or you may be inserting it upside down or in the wrong orientation. Remove any plastic adapter and seat the nano-SIM with the gold contacts oriented as shown on the tray.

Follow these steps
Power off and eject both SIM trays
