Why does an iPhone drop calls after a few minutes and ask to activate Wi-Fi Calling?

Answer

Short calls that fail with a Wi-Fi Calling prompt usually mean the cellular connection is unstable and iOS is offering Wi-Fi Calling as a fallback. Turning Wi-Fi Calling off temporarily, toggling Airplane Mode, then resetting network settings often stabilizes calling.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Reset Network Settings erases saved Wi-Fi passwords and VPN configurations; it does not erase photos or apps.

Follow these steps

  1. Turn off Wi-Fi Calling for now

Go to Settings > Cellular > Wi-Fi Calling and turn Wi-Fi Calling off. This prevents the phone from handing calls to Wi-Fi while you test plain cellular stability.

You should see: Wi-Fi Calling shows off, and the activation prompt stops appearing during tests.

  2. Refresh the cellular radio

Open Control Center or Settings and turn Airplane Mode on for 30 seconds, then turn it off. Wait until cellular bars return, then place a test call lasting several minutes.

You should see: The call stays up longer, or it still drops and you know a deeper network reset is needed.

  3. Reset Network Settings

Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Enter your passcode if asked. After the restart, rejoin Wi-Fi and test calling again.

You should see: Cellular and Wi-Fi reconnect cleanly; test calls no longer drop after a few minutes.

  4. Retest Wi-Fi Calling only if needed

If cellular calls are stable but you want Wi-Fi Calling later, turn it back on under Settings > Cellular > Wi-Fi Calling while on a trusted Wi-Fi network and confirm your carrier supports it.

You should see: You either keep Wi-Fi Calling off, or it activates successfully without dropping calls.

Extra tips

What to look for: Call Failed or similar messages, a prompt to activate Wi-Fi Calling, and cellular signal bars during the drop

Before you change anything: Note whether drops happen only indoors or also outdoors. Know your Wi-Fi password before resetting network settings. Do not erase all content—only reset network settings if needed. Avoid third-party signal booster apps from unknown sources.
