How do I set up a new TV with an existing Xfinity cable box?

Answer

If the cable box is already on site and outlets and cables are available, most new-TV setups can be completed without a technician by connecting HDMI, selecting the right input, and confirming channels come in.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Do not pay unexpected fees or share account passwords with anyone who contacts you about the TV setup outside official Xfinity support.
  • If outlets, cords, or the box show damage or a burning smell, stop and do not continue powering the equipment.

Follow these steps

  1. Connect power and HDMI

Plug the TV and the Xfinity cable box into working outlets. Connect an HDMI cable from the box HDMI OUT to an HDMI port on the TV, and note which HDMI number you used.

You should see: Both devices get power and the HDMI cable is firmly seated at both ends.

  2. Select the correct TV input

Turn on the TV, open the Input or Source menu, and choose the HDMI input that matches the port used by the cable box.

You should see: The TV shows the cable box startup screen, guide, or live video instead of a blank or no-signal screen.

  3. Confirm channels come in

Use the Xfinity remote to change channels and open the guide. Give the box a few minutes if it is still downloading updates after first power-on.

You should see: Live channels and the guide load normally.

  4. Decide whether a technician is needed

If the box never shows channels, required cables or coax wall outlets are missing, or the box will not power on, contact Xfinity through its official support channel to schedule an install or equipment check.

You should see: Either self-setup works, or Xfinity confirms whether a technician visit is required.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether the cable box powers on, whether the TV input menu shows an HDMI source, and whether live channels appear after the box finishes booting

Before you change anything: Confirm the cable box, remote, power cord, and HDMI cable are present. Check that a working wall outlet is available for both the TV and the box. Do not cancel or change your Xfinity account while testing the setup. Never share account passwords with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly about the install.
