How do I sync my phone contacts to a Volvo XC40?
Answer
Connect the phone over Bluetooth, allow contacts and phonebook access on both the phone and the XC40, then refresh the phonebook in the car’s Bluetooth device settings. If contacts stay empty, forget the device on both sides and pair again with contact sharing enabled.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Change pairing settings only when the vehicle is parked.
Follow these steps
Pair Bluetooth with phone access
On the XC40, open the Bluetooth or phone menu and pair your phone. On the phone, accept pairing and allow Phone/Calls access.
You should see: The car shows the phone as connected for calls.
Allow contacts permission
On iPhone, enable the Bluetooth device’s permission for Contacts if shown. On Android, allow Contacts and Phone permissions for Bluetooth or the car link prompt.
You should see: The phone no longer blocks contact sharing.
Sync or download the phonebook in the car
In the XC40 phone or Bluetooth device details, choose Sync contacts, Download phonebook, or the equivalent refresh option.
You should see: Names begin appearing in the car’s phonebook.
Forget and re-pair if the list stays empty
Delete the phone from the XC40 and the car from the phone’s Bluetooth list, reboot both, pair again, and accept every contacts prompt.
You should see: Contacts sync on the fresh pairing, or a specific error remains.

Extra tips
What to look for: Whether Bluetooth shows Connected for Phone calls, any prompt to allow contacts, and whether the car phonebook is empty or outdated.
Before you change anything: Know whether the phone is iPhone or Android. Park safely before changing car settings. Have the phone unlock code ready for permission prompts. Avoid random third-party sync apps.
