How do I buy a replacement remote for a streaming box?

Answer

Match the replacement remote to your exact streaming-box model, then buy an official remote from the manufacturer or request Replace / Contact Seller on the original order. If the remote still pairs only a few inches away, a new remote or a full device exchange is usually better than endless re-pairing.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Use Return/Replace only on the official retailer order page—not links from unexpected texts or popups.

Follow these steps

  1. Identify the exact box model

Turn the streaming box over or check Settings > About and write down the brand and full model name or SKU.

You should see: You know which official remote part number or product listing to buy.

  2. Try the official app remote temporarily

Install the manufacturer’s app for your box (such as the Google TV, Roku, Fire TV, or Apple TV Remote app) on a phone on the same Wi‑Fi network and confirm the box still responds.

You should see: You can control the box from the phone while arranging a hardware remote.

  3. Request a retailer replacement if eligible

If you bought the box or remote through Amazon, Walmart Marketplace, or another retailer, open order history, select the purchase, and use Return/Replace or Contact Seller. Explain that the remote only works at very close range and no longer powers the box off.

You should see: The seller approves a replacement remote or an exchange for the device.

  4. Order an official model-matched remote

If the return window is closed, buy a replacement remote from the manufacturer’s store or a listing that explicitly supports your exact box model, then follow that model’s pairing steps.

You should see: The new remote pairs and works at a normal living-room distance.

  5. Pair the new remote

Insert fresh batteries, put the box in pairing mode per the manufacturer’s instructions, and complete Bluetooth or IR setup from a few feet away.

You should see: Power, volume, and navigation work without needing to hold the remote against the box.

Extra tips

What to look for: The streaming box brand and model on the bottom sticker, whether the remote is Bluetooth/Wi‑Fi or IR, and the original order page if you bought it from a retailer.

Before you change anything: Write down the exact box model (for example Fire TV, Roku, Chromecast with Google TV, Apple TV). Check whether the box still works with the manufacturer’s phone app as a temporary remote. Have your order number ready if the device is still under return or warranty. Avoid random “universal” remotes that do not list your exact model.
