How do I fix a TV with no picture when the cable or streaming box seems fine?

Answer

Power-cycle the cable/satellite box and TV together, verify the correct TV input, and reseat HDMI. If apps on a smart TV also fail, treat it as a TV/network issue; if only the box input is black, focus on the box and HDMI path.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Unplug devices before reseating cables to reduce port damage risk.
  • Do not ignore burning smells or swollen power adapters—stop and replace hardware.

Follow these steps

  1. Power-cycle the box and TV

Unplug the cable/satellite box for 60 seconds and unplug the TV as well. Plug the box in first, wait 3–5 minutes for a full boot, then power the TV.

You should see: Both devices finish starting.

  2. Select the correct input and reseat HDMI

On the TV, choose the HDMI input used by the box. Unplug and reconnect the HDMI cable firmly at both ends.

You should see: The box menu or channel video appears.

  3. Compare with a built-in app

Open a smart-TV app such as YouTube. If apps work but the box input does not, the box/HDMI path is the problem. If nothing displays, continue TV troubleshooting.

You should see: You isolate box-path failure versus a broader TV display issue.

  4. Test another source

Connect another device to the same HDMI port. If that device shows video, contact the cable/satellite provider about the box; if not, try another port or TV service.

You should see: You know which device needs replacement or provider support.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether any on-screen menu appears, whether smart-TV apps work, and HDMI input selection.

Before you change anything: Identify whether video comes from a cable box, streaming stick, or built-in smart TV apps. Have a spare HDMI cable if possible. Avoid opening equipment.
