How do I fix a TV that says check the connections and will not show programs?
Answer
Power-cycle the TV and the streaming or cable box, reseat HDMI cables firmly at both ends, and select the correct HDMI input. If the message remains, test another HDMI port or cable.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Do not force HDMI plugs at an angle; bent pins can permanently damage ports.
- Opening the TV can create shock hazards and void warranty coverage.
Follow these steps
Power-cycle TV and source box
Turn off the TV and streaming/cable box, unplug both for 60 seconds, plug the box in first, wait two minutes, then power the TV.
You should see: Both devices finish booting and the source is ready.
Reseat HDMI and select the input
Unplug and firmly reconnect the HDMI cable at the TV and the box. Use the TV remote to select that exact HDMI input.
You should see: The program guide or home screen appears, or the error persists on that input.
Try another port or cable
Move to a different HDMI port or swap in another HDMI cable and repeat input selection.
You should see: Picture returns on the alternate path, pointing to a port or cable fault.
Test a second source
Connect a game console, Roku, or computer to the TV. If that works, focus repair on the original box; if nothing works, the TV input stage may need service.
You should see: You isolate whether the TV or the original source device is at fault.

Extra tips
What to look for: The on-screen check-connections message, whether input labels match the box, and any lights on the streaming/cable box.
Before you change anything: Note which HDMI port and device you use. Have a spare HDMI cable if possible. Avoid opening the TV case.
