How do you fix No Storage Detected on a Night Owl system?
Answer
Power down the Night Owl unit, reseat or replace the hard drive/SD card, then power on and format the storage in the Night Owl menu. Use a supported drive if detection still fails.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Formatting erases all existing Night Owl recordings on that disk.
- Unplug the recorder before touching internal drives.
Follow these steps
Power down safely
Exit to the Night Owl menu if possible, then unplug the recorder. Do not pull a drive while the unit is powered.
You should see: The system is fully powered off.
Reseat the storage
Open the case or SD slot as directed in your model’s manual. Reseat the hard drive SATA/power cables or remove and reinsert the SD card firmly.
You should see: Storage is firmly connected.
Format storage in Night Owl
Power on, go to storage/disk settings, and format the detected drive/card. Confirm when warned that recordings will be erased.
You should see: The system shows storage present with free space.
Replace unsupported or failed media
If storage still is not detected, install a Night Owl–supported HDD/SD card of an appropriate size and format it again. Update firmware if the menu offers it after storage is healthy.
You should see: Recordings save without the No Storage Detected error.

Extra tips
What to look for: Night Owl Protect shows No Storage Detected and live view may work without recording history.
Before you change anything: Power off before opening the recorder. Note that formatting erases existing recordings. Have a compatible replacement drive ready if yours has failed.
