Why can other people not hear me during iPhone calls?
Answer
This is often caused by call audio routing to Bluetooth, a wrong Call Audio Routing accessibility setting, or a blocked mic. Turning Bluetooth off and setting Call Audio Routing back to Automatic usually restores the handset microphone.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Avoid inserting sharp objects into mic openings while cleaning.
Follow these steps
Turn Bluetooth off for a test call
Go to Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth off, then place a test call.
You should see: The other person can hear you, pointing to a headset routing issue.
Reset Call Audio Routing
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Call Audio Routing and set it to Automatic.
You should see: Calls use the iPhone receiver mic unless you intentionally choose another route.
Check mic path and speakerphone
Clean lint from the bottom mic openings carefully, disconnect accessories, and test both normal and speakerphone calls.
You should see: At least one mic mode works, or all mic paths fail.
Seek service if every mic path fails
If nobody can hear you on cellular and apps like Voice Memos also record silence, book Apple or authorized service for microphone diagnostics.
You should see: A hardware repair path is identified if software routing was not the cause.

Extra tips
What to look for: Whether a Bluetooth headset or CarPlay/Android Auto style connection is active, and if mute is on during the call.
Before you change anything: Confirm mute is not enabled on the call screen. Disconnect wired headsets before testing. Note whether speakerphone works when earpiece calls do not.
