Why can't my iPhone load apps or Gmail during a local network outage?
Answer
If apps and Gmail suddenly stop loading while other people nearby have the same problem, a local ISP or cellular outage is the most likely cause. Confirm the outage, then reconnect Wi-Fi or cellular once service returns—you usually do not need to reset your Google account.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Do not share passwords, recovery codes, or one-time codes with anyone who contacts you about a "network outage."
- Avoid signing out of Gmail or resetting network settings during a confirmed outage—those steps will not restore provider service and can create extra login work later.
Follow these steps
Check for a local outage
Ask someone nearby, check your ISP or cellular carrier’s official status page or app, or try a second device on the same network. If several people in 55406 are offline, wait for the provider to restore service.
You should see: You know whether this is a neighborhood outage or only your iPhone.
Separate Wi-Fi from cellular
Open Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi off, then try Safari or Gmail on cellular data. Turn Wi-Fi back on and disable cellular data briefly to test Wi-Fi alone.
You should see: You can tell which connection path is failing.
Refresh the network connection
Swipe to Control Center, turn Airplane Mode on for about 30 seconds, then turn it off. Wait for Wi-Fi or cellular bars and the network name to return.
You should see: The phone reconnects and shows a normal signal again.
Retry Gmail after service returns
Once a web page loads in Safari, open the Gmail app and pull down to refresh. Only if mail still fails after the network is working, confirm the account is still signed in—do not change the password yet.
You should see: Inbox messages load, or you see a clear account-specific error instead of a blank network failure.
Restart the iPhone if needed
If the outage is over and other sites work but apps still hang, power the iPhone off, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on.
You should see: Apps and Gmail load normally on the restored network.

Extra tips
What to look for: Whether Wi-Fi or cellular shows connected bars but pages and apps still fail, and whether neighbors or another phone in ZIP 55406 have the same outage.
Before you change anything: Note whether Wi-Fi, cellular data, or both are affected. Try loading a simple website in Safari before changing Gmail settings. Do not sign out of Gmail or erase the phone to "fix" an outage. Never share your Google password with anyone who calls about the outage.
