Why does iPhone ask to enter the password for an Outlook account?
Answer
Open the built-in Mail account settings, choose the Outlook or Hotmail account that says Re-enter Password, and sign in with the same Microsoft email password you use on your computer. If that fails, remove and re-add the account from Settings, Mail, Accounts.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Do not give your Microsoft password or one-time codes to anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
- Removing an account from the iPhone deletes locally cached mail for that account on the phone; mail usually remains on Microsoft's servers.
Follow these steps
Open the Mail account that needs the password
On the iPhone, open Settings, then Mail, then Accounts. Tap Outlook, Hotmail, or the account marked Re-enter Password. If a system prompt is already showing, continue there only if it names your Microsoft account.
You should see: You see fields to sign in or re-enter the Microsoft account password.
Enter the Microsoft account password
Type the full email address if asked and the same password you use for that account on your laptop or at outlook.com. Complete any Microsoft two-factor approval on a trusted device.
You should see: The account accepts the password and the Re-enter Password warning clears.
Verify in the Mail app
Open the built-in Mail app (blue envelope icon), go to the Outlook inbox, and pull down to refresh.
You should see: New messages load or the inbox updates without another password error.
Remove and re-add if sign-in still fails
If the password is rejected even though it works on the web, delete the account from Settings, Mail, Accounts, then choose Add Account, Outlook, and sign in again. Turn Mail on first; add Contacts and Calendars only if you want them.
You should see: A freshly added Outlook account syncs mail on the iPhone.

Extra tips
What to look for: Enter the password for Outlook account, Re-enter Password beside an Outlook or Hotmail account, and whether Mail opens after authentication.
Before you change anything: Confirm you are entering the password in Settings or the system Mail prompt, not a random popup website. Use the same Microsoft password that works on your computer. Never share the password with unexpected callers.
