Why won't a multi-disc CD changer play discs?

On a changer this age the usual causes are a dirty laser lens, a disc sitting slightly out of position in the carousel, or a drive belt that has perished. Clean the lens with a lens-cleaning disc first, then check whether every disc fails or only some — that single observation narrows it down quickly.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Unplug the player before opening the case. Stored charge in the power supply can persist after switch-off.
- Do not look directly into the laser assembly while the unit is powered.
Follow these steps
Confirm it is not one bad disc
Try three or four discs you know play elsewhere, including at least one commercially pressed album.
You should see: You know whether every disc fails or only some.
Clean the laser lens
Run a CD lens-cleaning disc through the player following its instructions. This is the least invasive fix and often the whole answer.
You should see: The player reads discs again, or you have ruled the lens out.
Check the discs are seated properly
Power off, open the carousel, and make sure each disc sits flat in its slot with nothing catching.
You should see: The carousel turns without resistance.
Listen to the mechanism
With the cover on, start playback and listen. Repeated clicking or a motor spinning without the tray moving points at a perished drive belt.
You should see: You can tell a mechanical fault from an optical one.
Decide on repair
Belts and laser assemblies are replaceable by an audio repair shop. Weigh the quote against the unit's value before committing.
