How do I change the email address on an account?

Answer

Change it from the account's own security or profile settings while you are still signed in — that is far easier than proving ownership later. Most services send a confirmation link to the new address and a notice to the old one, and the change only completes once you click the link.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Never action an email-change request you did not start. That message arriving unprompted usually means someone is trying to take the account.
  • Changing the address can break sign-in on devices where the account is already signed in.

Follow these steps

  1. Sign in and open account settings

Go to the service's website, sign in, and find Account, Profile, or Security settings.

You should see: You can see the current email address listed.

  2. Start the change

Choose to edit or change the email, enter the new address carefully, and confirm your password if asked.

You should see: The service says a confirmation has been sent.

  3. Confirm from the new address

Open the message at the new address and click the confirmation link. The change is not live until you do.

You should see: The account shows the new address.

  4. Handle a dead old address

If confirmation is also required at the old address and you cannot reach it, use the service's account recovery form instead and explain the situation.

You should see: Recovery is under review.

  5. Check what else used that address

Update any linked billing, two-factor, or recovery settings that still point at the old address.

You should see: Nothing important still depends on the old address.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether the service asks you to confirm from the old address as well as the new one. If the old address is dead, that route will stall and recovery is the alternative.

Before you change anything: Make sure you can receive mail at the new address first, and note any subscriptions billed to the account.
