How do I download maps on a new GPS navigation device?

Connect the GPS to power and stable Wi‑Fi (or the vendor’s PC updater), open Offline Maps / Map Update in Device Information or Settings, and finish downloads without unplugging.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Unplugging mid-download can corrupt map databases and require a reinstall.
  • Only use the manufacturer’s official updater software—avoid random map download sites.

Follow these steps

  1. Confirm the exact model

    Open Device Information or About on the GPS and write down the model and software version.

    You should see: You know which map package and updater apply.

  2. Connect power and Wi‑Fi

    Plug the unit into power, join a stable Wi‑Fi network from its wireless settings, and keep it awake.

    You should see: The GPS shows a solid network connection.

  3. Start Offline Maps or Map Update

    Open Offline Maps, Map Update, or a similar menu and select the regions you need. Start the download and wait until it reports complete.

    You should see: Map files finish installing without errors.

  4. Use the PC updater if Wi‑Fi updates are unavailable

    If the unit requires a computer tool, install only the manufacturer’s official updater on Windows or Mac, connect by USB, and follow its map install steps.
