How do I erase an iPhone when Face ID does not work?

Answer

You do not need working Face ID to erase an iPhone if you know the device passcode, or you can erase it from iCloud Find My on another device. Use passcode authentication for local erase, or Erase This Device in iCloud.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Erase All Content and Settings permanently deletes local data that is not backed up.
  • Do not give Apple ID codes to anyone offering to bypass Face ID for you.

Follow these steps

  1. Erase locally with the passcode

Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings. When asked to authenticate, use the device passcode instead of Face ID.

You should see: The erase process starts without needing Face ID success.

  2. Or erase from iCloud on another device

On a computer or another phone, sign in to iCloud.com or Find My, select the iPhone, and choose Erase This Device.

You should see: The iPhone begins a remote erase while online, or erases when it next connects.

  3. Wait for the setup screen

Leave the iPhone powered on and connected to power until the Hello or setup screen appears.

You should see: The phone is wiped and ready for setup as new or from backup.

  4. Sign in with the Apple ID if asked

If Activation Lock appears, sign in with the Apple ID that was on the device, then continue setup.

You should see: Setup proceeds and you can skip Face ID setup until hardware is repaired if needed.

Extra tips

What to look for: Erase All Content and Settings passcode prompts, Face ID unavailable messages, and Erase This Device in iCloud Find Devices.

Before you change anything: Back up first if you still need data from the iPhone. Confirm you know the device passcode and Apple ID password for Activation Lock. Erasing deletes local data. Never share Apple ID credentials with unexpected callers.
