How do I get sound from a Fire TV Stick through a soundbar?

Answer

Most soundbars connect to the TV's ARC or eARC HDMI port, while the Fire TV Stick goes into a regular HDMI port on the same TV. Set the soundbar input to HDMI, then check the TV's audio output setting and HDMI CEC setting. Confirm the exact menu names on your own TV, since they vary by brand.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Turn off the TV and soundbar and unplug them before moving cables. Do not force an HDMI plug into a port that does not fit.

Follow these steps

  1. Plug the Fire TV into a regular HDMI port

Connect the Fire TV Stick or Fire TV Cube to an HDMI port on the TV that is not labeled ARC or eARC.

You should see: The Fire TV home screen appears on the TV.

  2. Connect the soundbar to the ARC or eARC port

Plug the soundbar's HDMI cable into the TV's ARC or eARC port, then connect the soundbar's power. On the soundbar, press the Input button or use its remote to select HDMI.

You should see: The soundbar's display or input indicator shows HDMI, if the soundbar has one.

  3. Set the TV to send sound to the soundbar

In the TV's settings, open the audio or sound menu and look for an option named Speakers or Audio Output. Choose the option for the soundbar or audio system. Amazon's troubleshooting steps name this setting as Speakers or Audio Output, set to Soundbar or Audio. The exact wording varies by TV brand, so check the TV's manual if you cannot find it.

You should see: When you play a video, the sound comes from the soundbar and the TV speakers stay quiet.

  4. Turn on HDMI CEC or ARC control

In the TV's HDMI settings, turn on the option for HDMI CEC or HDMI ARC control, which may appear under a different name on your TV. This lets the TV remote handle soundbar volume and power on many models.

You should see: The TV remote changes the soundbar volume, or the soundbar turns on when the TV turns on.

  5. Power-cycle the soundbar and reconnect devices

Unplug the soundbar's power cable for about 30 seconds, then plug it back in and reconnect the HDMI cable. If sound still fails, unplug other devices from the TV, reconnect the soundbar, and then reconnect the other devices one at a time.

You should see: The soundbar powers back on and plays sound from the Fire TV or a test video.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether the Fire TV home screen shows on the TV, whether the soundbar shows HDMI as its input, whether the TV's Speakers or Audio Output setting points to the soundbar, and whether the TV remote controls the soundbar volume.

Before you change anything: Find the ARC or eARC port on the back of the TV, usually labeled on the port. Check that you have a spare HDMI cable for the soundbar if the one in the box does not fit. Turn the TV and soundbar off at the wall or power strip before moving cables.
