Why does a TV show a message that it will turn off in 3 minutes?
Answer
That message is usually a built-in power-saving or timer feature counting down to switch the TV off. The most common causes are a sleep timer, an auto power-off setting that triggers after hours without a button press, or a no-signal setting that fires when a connected box goes to standby. Look in the TV's settings under Timer, Power, or Energy saving and turn those features off.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Do not open the TV's casing or try hardware repairs. If the message is not a setting, contact the maker's support.
Follow these steps
Note when the message appears
The next time the message shows up, notice what led to it. Did it come after a set amount of viewing time, after hours without touching the remote, or soon after a connected device was switched off or went to standby? Also look at what is connected and which input the TV is showing.
You should see: You can describe the pattern, such as "after about four hours with no remote use" or "when the cable box goes to standby."
Cancel the countdown if you are still watching
While the message is on screen, press a button on the remote, usually OK or Select, to stop the countdown. Some TVs show this prompt on purpose so you can keep the TV on. If a button press does not cancel it, move on to the settings steps so it does not interrupt you again.
You should see: The message disappears and the TV keeps playing.
Turn off the sleep timer
Open the TV's Settings and look for Sleep Timer or a similar item, usually under Time, Timer or System. Set it to Off. If you have a Sony TV, Sony's help guide on why a TV turns itself off lists the sleep timer and the other places to check. A sleep timer that was set once can stay active until you turn it off.
You should see: The sleep timer shows Off, or a duration of none.
Turn off auto power-off and energy-saving shutdown
In the same Settings area, look under Power, Energy saving or Eco for items such as Auto Power Off, Turn off TV after, or No signal power off, and switch them off or set a longer time. If you have a Samsung TV, Samsung's guide to what to do when a TV switches itself off describes a countdown warning before shutdown and where to find these settings. These features often turn the TV off after hours without a button press or when the current source has no signal.
You should see: The auto power-off and energy-saving shutdown settings are off, or set to a longer time.
Check connected devices
If the message appears soon after a cable box, soundbar or console turns off, the TV may be reacting to that device. Many TVs treat a source with no signal as a reason to switch off. Some also follow connected devices through a feature called HDMI control, which goes by different names such as Anynet+ or Simplink. Try turning off that feature, or unplug one connected device at a time, and see whether the message stops.
You should see: The message no longer appears when the connected device turns off, or you have narrowed it to one device.
Restart the TV and check for updates
Unplug the TV for about 30 seconds, plug it back in, then open Settings and check for a software update. If the message keeps coming back after the settings above are off, contact the TV maker's support with the brand, model number, and the pattern you noted in the first step.
You should see: The TV starts normally, is up to date, and the countdown no longer appears, or you have the details ready for support.

Extra tips
What to look for: When the message appears: after a set time, after hours without pressing any button, or soon after a connected device such as a cable box, soundbar or game console turns off. The timing points to which setting is responsible.
Before you change anything: Find the TV's brand and exact model number, usually on a label on the back. Note what was on screen and what other devices were connected when the message appeared. Keep the remote handy, since the settings menu is opened with it. Write down any setting you change so you can switch it back if it was not the cause.
