How can deleted WhatsApp messages and contacts be restored?

Answer

Restoring deleted WhatsApp messages generally requires an existing chat backup and reinstalling the app, since there is no simple in-app undo for deleted chats. Contacts deleted from the phone are recovered separately through the phone's own contacts or cloud account.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Reinstalling and restoring will overwrite any chats created after the last backup with the backup's older content.

Follow these steps

  1. Check the last backup date

Open WhatsApp, go to Settings, then Chats, then Chat Backup, and note the date and time shown next to the last backup.

You should see: A specific backup date and time is visible, showing whether it is from before or after the deletion.

  2. Uninstall and reinstall the app

Uninstall WhatsApp, then reinstall it from the official app store and open it to begin the sign-in process again.

You should see: The app opens on a fresh setup screen ready for verification.

  3. Restore from backup during setup

When prompted during setup with the same phone number, choose to restore chat history from the available backup rather than starting fresh.

You should see: Messages from the backup date reappear in the chat list once the restore finishes.

  4. Check the phone's contacts app and cloud account separately

Since WhatsApp does not manage phone contacts, open the phone's own contacts app and check any linked cloud account (such as a Google or iCloud account) for a way to restore recently deleted contacts.

You should see: Deleted contacts reappear if the phone or cloud account keeps a recently-deleted contacts folder.

Extra tips

What to look for: The date and time shown next to the last backup, and whether contacts were deleted from the phone's contacts app or only removed from a chat.

Before you change anything: Confirm whether chat backup was turned on before the messages were deleted. Check the exact date and time of the last backup before doing anything else. Confirm you are restoring from the same phone number and account used originally. Never share verification codes with anyone during this process.
