How do I find a lost iPhone with Find My?

Answer

From another Apple device or iCloud.com, open Find My, select the missing iPhone, view its location if online, then use Play Sound, Lost Mode, or Erase iPhone as needed. Lost Mode lets you show a callback number and a short message such as that the phone is lost.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Erasing a device can remove the ability to see new locations after the erase finishes.

Follow these steps

  1. Open Find My on a trusted device or iCloud

On another Apple device open the Find My app, or on a computer go to iCloud.com and open Find Devices. Sign in with the Apple ID from the missing iPhone.

You should see: You see a list of devices that includes the lost iPhone.

  2. Check the location or last seen time

Select the iPhone on the map. Note whether it is online now or offline with a last known location and time.

You should see: You have a current location or a last-seen place to search.

  3. Play a sound if it may be nearby

If you think the phone is in the house or car, choose Play Sound and listen for the chime even if it was on silent.

You should see: The iPhone plays a sound, or it stays silent because it is out of range or offline.

  4. Turn on Lost Mode with a contact message

Choose Mark As Lost / Lost Mode. Enter a phone number where you can be reached and a short lock-screen message such as “This phone is lost. Please call or text me.” Confirm activation.

You should see: The iPhone locks and can show your callback details to anyone who finds it.

  5. Notify your carrier and consider Erase only if needed

Ask your carrier to suspend the line if fraud is a risk. Use Erase This Device in Find My only if you accept that you may lose tracking after the erase completes on a phone that comes online.

You should see: The line is protected, and you have decided whether remote erase is appropriate.

Extra tips

What to look for: The device name in Find My, a green online location or gray offline last-seen time, and Lost Mode fields for a phone number and message.

Before you change anything: Use a trusted computer or another Apple device you control. Sign in with the Apple ID that was on the missing iPhone. Prefer Lost Mode before Erase if you still hope to recover the phone. Never share your Apple ID password with someone who claims they can track it for a fee.
