How do I find contacts after an iPhone may be lost?
Answer
Sign in to iCloud.com or the Find Devices app with the Apple Account used on the iPhone to locate it, mark it Lost, and check Contacts if iCloud Contacts was enabled. Also check any Mac or iPad signed into the same account, and other accounts (Google, Exchange) that may have synced contacts separately.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Never share Apple Account passwords or two-factor codes with anyone who contacts you about the lost phone.
- Erasing a device deletes on-phone data that was not already synced to iCloud or another account.
Follow these steps
Locate or lock the iPhone
On another device, open Find Devices / Find My or go to iCloud.com and sign in. Select the missing iPhone, view any location, and turn on Lost Mode with a callback number.
You should see: The phone is marked Lost, or you see it is offline with the last known location.
Open iCloud Contacts
In iCloud.com, open Contacts and confirm whether the address book is there. Export or copy critical numbers you need immediately.
You should see: Contacts appear if iCloud Contacts was enabled on the missing iPhone.
Check other synced accounts
On a Mac or another phone, check Google Contacts, Outlook/Exchange, or Settings > Apps > Contacts accounts. On a Mac, also review System Settings > Internet Accounts.
You should see: You find contacts stored outside iCloud, if any.
Restore to a replacement only after backing up needs
If you replace the iPhone, sign in with the same Apple Account during setup to restore iCloud data. Erase the lost device from Find Devices only after Lost Mode and after you accept that Activation Lock stays until you remove it from the account.
You should see: Contacts return on the replacement device from iCloud or the other account.

Extra tips
What to look for: Find Devices location or offline status; iCloud Contacts list; Internet Accounts on a Mac; Google Contacts if Gmail was used
Before you change anything: Use your own Apple Account password on official Apple sites only. Enable Lost Mode before erasing if you still hope to recover the phone. Do not share Apple Account codes with unexpected callers. Avoid erasing until you have exported contacts if possible.
